Sharon is a native of San Antonio, Texas, and a graduate of Texas A&M University. She holds a degree in Biomedical Science with a master’s degree in Microbiology. As a microbiologist, she has had over 30 years of experience in the food industry. As a lead microbiologist for the Department of Defense, she provided expertise in the Food Testing and Diagnostic Laboratory at Fort Sam Houston, which services all branches of the military. For over 9 years, she served as Vice President of Laboratory Services for Food Safety Net Services, an ISO 17025 Accredited network of food testing laboratories and food safety consultants.
Sharon recently retired as Sr. Director of Food Safety for H-E-B, a Texas and Mexico based retailer. In this role she oversaw Food Safety, Technical Services, Regulatory Affairs, Recall Management, and Supply Chain Quality Assurance for the company. She also oversaw the H-E-B internal laboratory, Metrix360, an ISO17025 accredited laboratory which includes chemistry, microbiology and physical analysis in the scope of work.
Sharon has been active in the industry through the Conference for Food Protection and is current Chair of Council II and Vice Chair of the Food Protection Manager Certification Committee. Other industry involvement includes the International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) as past Chair of the Retail & Foodservice Professional Development Group, the Educational Advisory Board for the Annual Food Safety Summit, the Safety Committee for the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), Past Chair of the FMI Food Protection Committee, the FDA Retail Food Safety Partnership, the NACCHO Retail Safety Advisory Group, The St. Phillips College Department of Natural Sciences Technology Advisory Committee as well as serving as Chair of the Board for Family Service, a non-profit organization which supports families in the San Antonio and surrounding communities.
Sharon is married to James Wood and has three sons, Travis, Grant and Royce. She enjoys dancing, being outdoors, exercise and spending time with her grandchildren.
