Hiwot Tadesse is Deputy Director of the food inspection directorate of the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority(EFDA). The EFDA is in charge of food and drug regulation to protect the public from food and drug-related hazards. Hiwot received her first degree in Biology from Bahirdar University in 2005 and went on to get her Msc. in food science and nutrition from Addis Ababa University in 2012 . She has experience in scientific research including publication of her research titled "Preparation of Injera from Pre-Fermented Flour: Nutritional and Sensory Quality." Hiwot has also worked in food regulation from the woreda to the federal level in Ethiopia. She has given different trainings in food safety regulation, good manufacturing practice(GMP), food safety management systems, and food fortification throughout Ethiopia and Ghana. Further, Hiwot has taken trainings in risk assessment, risk categorization, risk management, and risk communication. Because of her strong commitments, she was selected to serve as an investigator for a nationwide food safety issue that led her to do work in in Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Hiwot has also worked with the media to promote awareness in food safety issues such as adulteration and aflatoxine. She spoke in the House of parliament about challenges of food safety regulation in the country and serves as a member of the Food Science and Technology Professionals association. Her work focuses on addressing problems related to food safety prevention of fodborne illness.
