Today, December 10th is Kevin Kowalcyk's 24th birthday. Happy birthday to our Food Safety Angel! Kevin is the reason why we do what we do, so that no other family has to experience a similar tragedy from the simple act of eating what should be "safe food". Through scientific research, education, outreach and public service, the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention (CFI) strives to provide an independent voice, one that is committed to using the best available science to develop evidence-informed policies and practices that create a positive food safety culture from farm to table and beyond. Consider contributing $24 today in honor of Kevin Kowalcyk's birthday and the center's continued effort in preventing foodborne disease.

Our 2022 Giving Campaign has 6 donation levels: 600 dollars for the estimated 600 million people that are sickened globally each year by foodborne pathogens. 400 dollars for the estimated 420,000 people that die each year globally from foodborne disease with 1/3 of these deaths occurring in children, according to the World Health Organization. 128 dollars for the estimated 128,000 Americans hospitalized each year due to foodborne illness. 77.70 dollars for the estimated $77.7 billion dollar cost of foodborne illness per year in the United States, according to Ohio State researchers. 48 dollars for the estimated 48 million foodborne illnesses per year in the United States. And finally, 24 dollars for the 24th birthday of Kevin Kowalcyk that he should be celebrating with his family today!
At CFI, we don't do research simply for the sake of doing research. There is a mission, a vision, a story, and a future in which food is sustainable, secure and safe. And for us there is no stopping. We can't change the events of 2001, but we can help prevent others from similarly suffering and dying from preventable foodborne illnesses in this 21st century world.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." – MARGARET MEAD. Once again, happy birthday dear Kevin!
